[17 December 2008 - Hong Kong] - Today, trial operations began at Phase II of Zhuhai International Container Terminals (Gaolan) (ZICT(G)) with the docking of the 6,350-TEU APL New Jersey. An inaugural ceremony, attended by over 300 guests, was held to mark the event.

Attendees included representatives of the Guangdong provincial and Zhuhai municipal governments as well as the top executives from the port and shipping industries. Gan Lin, Secretary of the Zhuhai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Zhuhai Mayor Zhong Shijian, and James S. Tsien, Group Executive Director of Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) were the guests-of-honour.

At the ceremony, Mr. Tsien said, "Hutchison Port Holdings has been investing in Zhuhai Port for over 15 years. From the opening of our joint-venture terminals in Jiuzhou and Gaolan Phase I, to the construction of these two 50,000-tonne container berths and the upcoming development of four 100,000-tonne container berths, HPH continues to develop Zhuhai Port into a leading international container shipping hub in South China. Our comprehensive port network in the Pearl River Delta and close partnerships with our joint-venture companies provide efficient and reliable transportation solutions to local manufacturers and cargo owners."

ZICT(G) Phase II, which comprises two container berths with a total quay length of 824 metres and a depth alongside of 15.8 metres, is capable of handling today's mega-sized container vessels. With an area of 56 hectares, ZICT(G) Phase II will be equipped with eight super-post-Panamax quay cranes and 24 electrified rubber-tyred gantry cranes. It will be fully operational in August 2009.

Supported by a comprehensive road and rail network and capitalising on economic growth in southern China, ZICT(G) is well-positioned to become the shipping hub of the western Pearl River Delta.
