Swire Properties Wins Prestigious CIBSE Award for Leadership in Energy Efficiency

18 March 2010, Hong Kong - Swire Properties (SPL) has received the "Client of the Year - Low Carbon Operation Award" from The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers* (CIBSE), the authority which supports and represents the UK's building services profession. Swire Properties is the only enterprise from Asia to win a CIBSE award this year.

The CIBSE Low Carbon Performance Awards 2010 recognise and reward proven achievements worldwide in delivering carbon savings in the operation and management of buildings. Swire Properties received the award at the CIBSE Awards ceremony in London, where Transport for London and the UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's finished as runners-up. The judges praised the Company for committing its own funds to developing carbon savings methodologies which would benefit everybody.

"We are very proud to receive this international award from CIBSE, which reaffirms our efforts in promoting sustainable buildings. We have every hope that our work on this front will encourage low carbon management within the property industry as well as among our tenants." said Cary Chan, Swire Properties' Head of Technical Services.

The Company's knowledge-based energy management approach adopts best practice from the areas of project design and building management and is already responsible for saving approximately 70 million kWh or 49,000 tonnes CO2 from 2001 to 2008 from the Swire Properties portfolio alone, a saving equivalent to planting over 2.1 million trees.

The CIBSE award commended Swire Properties' pioneering efforts in offering its office tenants free energy audits and its energy efficiency research programmes with top universities and research institutions, including a newly-launched HK$7.5 million research fund with Tsinghua University in Beijing.

*Founded in 1976, CIBSE is a UK-based professional organisation that promotes sustainable and inspirational buildings, encourages best practices in building services engineering and, represents the profession. CIBSE is consulted by the UK government on policy matters relating to construction, engineering and sustainability.
